Football fans are in for a huge weekend across Europe, with several heavyweight clashes taking place between 4 and 6 September.
In France’s Ligue 1, PSG and Monaco got the weekend underway with a major upset, as Monaco came from behind to beat the Parisians 2-1 at the Parc des Princes. The defeat extended PSG’s winless start to the 2026/27 season, with Luis Enrique’s side still searching for their first victory in all competitions.
For the back-to-back European champions, Wednesday’s UEFA Champions League opener against Slovan Bratislava provides an immediate opportunity to get back to winning ways and ease some of the early pressure.
Italy’s Serie A serves up two massive clashes of its own, beginning with Inter Milan v Napoli on Saturday before Juventus host AC Milan the following day.
Recent meetings between Inter and Napoli have favoured the defending champions, with Napoli unbeaten in their last five encounters against the Nerazzurri, recording one win and four draws. Inter, however, head into the game with a perfect league record after winning their opening two matches, adding another layer to an already intriguing contest.
Goals may be harder to come by when Juventus and AC Milan meet in Turin. Four of their last five Serie A meetings have finished 0-0, with the only exception being Juventus’ 2-0 victory in January 2025. With both sides making strong starts to the new campaign, something may finally have to give.
Wrapping up the weekend is Arsenal v Chelsea at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.
Chelsea have not beaten Arsenal since their 2-0 victory at the Emirates on 22 August 2021. Arsenal are now unbeaten in their last 10 meetings with Chelsea across all competitions, winning seven and drawing three. In the Premier League specifically, Arsenal’s current eight-match unbeaten run against their London rivals is their longest since going 19 league games without defeat against Chelsea between 1995 and 2005.
There is even more riding on Sunday’s meeting than recent history. Defending champions Arsenal and Chelsea have both won their opening two Premier League games of the season, meaning at least one perfect record will fall unless the points are shared.
With rivalries, unbeaten records and early-season momentum all on the line, this weekend has all the ingredients to deliver some memorable clashes.
